What is a CEREC Crown?

Team Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are very commonly used in dentistry - often playing a role in many restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry procedures. The problem is that the dentist usually takes impressions at the office and then ships the order for the crown off to an outside lab. It can take weeks to receive it back!

CEREC crowns are different - there is no wait.

How CEREC Crowns Work

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration for Esthetic Ceramics. This means that CEREC crowns are those that are made in the dental office and are done so the same day. Here’s how they work.

An examination is done to determine whether or not a CEREC crown will be a good fit, literally, for your tooth. If so, then preparations will be made before going any further. In other words, if you are having a root canal or need to have a broken tooth cleaned up a bit, this will take place before moving forward with impressions.

CEREC crowns use an intraoral camera to that digital images of your teeth in order to create the 3D model of your new crown. Milling then takes place in which a machine will actually do the work of creating the crown. It is up to the dentist to choose the best ceramic block so that the color matches your teeth as closely as possible. The entire milling process takes about 15 minutes.

Finally, the finished product is placed on your tooth – and, because it was done in the office, it has a higher chance of accuracy for a proper fit and bite.

Why Choose CEREC Crowns?

So, what makes someone opt for CEREC crowns over traditional dental crowns? Well, there are quite a few advantages to this new, quickly growing option for your dental crown needs. Let’s take a look at a few:

CEREC crowns are designed with high-quality, durable ceramic that gives you a long-lasting natural-looking crown. They are not designed with metal so they look real, function well, and blend in beautifully with your teeth.

  • A high level of convenience, as you don’t have to wait for your crown - and you don’t have to make any extra appointments that interfere with your busy schedule.
  • You don’t have to fuss with temporary crowns or change your eating habits to protect your tooth due to one.
  • Thanks to digital impressions, you no longer have to sink your teeth into that foam tray of thick foam.

Even though the tooth is made the same day, it is important to know that CEREC crowns are not any less durable or lower in quality than other options for dental crowns. Many agree they are better!
