Our Garden History
Our building was built in 1991 by Dr. Lustgarten, who practiced urology. He had birdfeeders hanging in the pepper trees directly behind his personal office, which is now Dr. Tyler’s personal office and ceramic lab. In 2023, Dr. Tyler remodeled our beautiful building, transforming it into a state-of-the-art dental practice. For the first year after remodeling, he didn’t hang a birdfeeder and didn’t think he would in the future. But then, one day, without Dr. Tyler’s knowledge, his mother hung the old feeder we had inherited from Dr. Lustgarten. That simple act was the beginning of something special.
From the very first week, the old feeder attracted a beautiful male painted bunting, cardinals, woodpeckers, and many other species. Their bright colors and songs brought so much joy to everyone in the office that we decided to take the next step — purchasing a new birdfeeder equipped with a camera. This allowed Dr. Tyler and his family to watch recordings of the birds visiting the feeder, which quickly became a favorite pastime, especially for Dr. Tyler’s mother, who loved seeing all the different birds up close on the screen.
After a few weeks of enjoying the videos, Dr. Tyler’s mother asked, “Is there a way to show the patients all the birds behind the practice, the way we can see them?” This got Dr. Tyler thinking!
He envisioned a live-feed camera mounted in a protective box on the awning over Dr. Tyler’s personal office windows directed at what he would create into a picturesque flower and plant-filled butterfly garden, with feeders for hummingbirds, birds and squirrels. After much research and advice from friends, family and patients, a plan was made and carried out. Only sprinklers installation, heavy chainsaw work, and the selection and purchase of plants was hired out to professionals. But, even those tasks, Dr. Tyler made all final decisions. The hard work of digging, planting, mulching, etc. was carried out by Dr. Tyler, his wife, his mother, and even his 2 boys. It has become a labor of love for his family. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we all do!
